This year we have decided to experiment with a new selection process, with the aim of balancing our organization’s capacity with our mission to include as many people as possible in the steamroller printing process!
For the 2024 print season, we will facilitate the creation of 12 steamroller prints at our printing festival on June 1, 2024 at the Marvin Williams Recreation Center.
The first 6 artists will be chosen from a pool of applicants, as single artists. Applications will be open to anyone who has previously printed with Wayzgoose Kitsap as a linoleum artist. Selected artists will be considered “Returning Artist Mentors” and will have the opportunity to design, carve and print their own lino steamroller prints, but they will also serve as mentors, helping artists groups (see below) through the process as well. Applications for RAM’s will be accepted through October 20, 2023. The selection committee will announce our 2024 “Returning Artist Mentors” in November 2024.
In January 2024, applications will open up to Artist Groups, teams of people who apply to design, carve and print a lino steamroller print together. These groups will apply with a designated team leader to be a main point of contact through the process. Our intention is to encourage marginalized groups (including teams, families, coworkers, classrooms, etc.), with a focus on youth and students, to apply, making this artistic platform more accessible to a growing number of our community members. Applications for Artist Groups will be accepted between (DATE) and (DATE). The selection committee will announce our 2024 Artist Groups in February 2024.
Materials for carving, educational videos and training, mentorship support and guidance, and in-person artist meet-ups will be provided by Wayzgoose Kitsap, in addition to support from our Artist Liasans, Brie Coolbaugh and Lynda Sherman.
At the 2024 Wayzgoose Kitsap Art Festival, RAMs and Artist Groups will print their carved linoleum blocks with a team of volunteers, in a public display of community art. Each artist/group will get 3 (?) original copies of their prints, and will license their artwork to Wayzgoose Kitsap to help raise funds to support the cause. Finished original prints will be for sale, available for raffle, and given to our sponsors in appreciation of their generous support. An archival print will be held by Wayzgoose Kitsap in perpetuity, and a community print will be saved for a future rotating public display.
We are excited to try something new this year, a process that aligns with our values by fostering mentoring relationships, building community, and providing more opportunities for those who have been marginalized by systemic racism, ableism, ageism, homophobia, religious discrimination/oppression, and the patriarchy.
PLEASE NOTE: Artist Group Applications will be accepted starting in January 2024. Please follow us on social and subscribe to our email list to receive notice and a link to sign up!
